Dabei schirmt ein Edelgas die Schweißnaht von außen und gleichzeitig von innen vor Sauerstoff-Einfluss ab. Durch den Luftabschluss wird eine spätere Oxidation (Rostbildung) der Schweißnaht verhindert. Gleichzeitig erreicht man eine wesentlich höhere Festigkeit der Schweißnaht im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Verfahren. Dabei ist die Schweißnaht sehr flach (minimale Schweißwurzel).
